Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is one of the most popular cannabinoid compounds in the world. It is mainly found in the hemp and marijuana plants and offers a lot of health benefits to both humans and animals. Studies have found that CBD possesses several therapeutic properties that can be very helpful in treating some of the common mental and physical health disorders.
Unlike THC, CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid compound, which means CBD won’t produce a euphoric sensation. This one of the main reasons why people are more open to using CBD products for their health problems. CBD is widely used for the treatment of pain, anxiety, arthritis, etc. and this makes pet owners wonder whether CBD is also beneficial for their dogs.
It is important to note that, the US Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved any CBD pet products. There are no clear regulations on giving CBD to pets. Veterinarians can only recommend CBD for the health problems in pets. In this article, we will take a look at whether CBD is an effective treatment option for health problems in dogs.
What Do The Vets Say About CBD For Dogs?
According to a recent survey conducted by the VIN News Service, 60% of the 2,131 veterinarians have reported that they have recommended CBD oil at least once a month to the pets that come into their clinic. However, a significant number of vets are not ready to discuss this because advising CBD for pets can lead to penalties and suspension of licenses in some states of the US.
In states like California, veterinarians can recommend CBD for pets without the fear of getting any punishment. Recently, the state has passed a law regarding the prevention of penalizing vets for talking about the use of cannabis products for their dogs. They can talk about the health benefits, side effects, and toxicities of cannabis products.
In many other states, this type of bill is about to be passed. Therefore, the vets in those states may not prescribe the use of CBD for your dogs. In some states where medical cannabis is legal, the laws only allow healthcare providers to recommend cannabis for humans. Prescribing cannabis products to animals is strictly prohibited in these states.
How Is CBD Beneficial For Dogs?
For many decades CBD has undergone numerous clinical and laboratory studies and there is evidence for its effectiveness in the treatment of several health problems in humans, including anxiety, arthritis, pain, cancer, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, etc. However, only a few studies have looked into the effects of CBD in dogs.
In 2018, a study looked at the anti-inflammatory properties, anti-pain properties, and safety of using CBD in dogs that suffered from osteoarthritis. During the study, the dogs were given a daily dose of 2-8 mg of CBD depending on their body weight. At the end of the study, 80% of the dogs showed improvement in the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Another study in 2019, looked at the effects of CBD on dogs suffering from epilepsy. The study found that the use of CBD significantly helped in decreasing the frequency and severity of CBD in the dogs. However, the researchers believed that many further studies are required to conclusively suggest CBD as an effective treatment option for epilepsy in dogs. There are also numerous anecdotal records that are showing positive impacts of using CBD on dogs suffering from colon cancer, digestive disorders, etc.
How To Give CBD For Dogs?
CBD pet products come in a wide range of forms, including treats, creams, tinctures, oils, etc. However, there are not enough studies that looked into the effectiveness of each of these CBD products on dogs.
A recent study conducted by the Colorado State University revealed that oral administration of CBD oil for dogs that suffer from epilepsy was more effective than CBD cream and CBD capsules. There are also several studies going on to find the effective dosage of CBD for dogs. A recent study claims that 2 mg of CBD per kg of weight can help in alleviating the symptoms of osteoarthritis in dogs.
It is important to note that every dog will respond differently to CBD, which means we cannot be sure about which dosage is safe. Therefore, it is better to start giving CBD to your dog with a small dose and monitor the reaction of the pets for an hour. If you do not observe any abnormal reaction or side effects, you can gradually increase the dosage till your dog start getting the desired effects.
Remember, there are not enough studies that prove conclusively that CBD is an effective treatment for many health problems in dogs. However, there are many anecdotal records that claim the effectiveness of CBD in dogs.
